Las Vegas Beats a 73-Year-Old Record

Rainy Weather Las Vegas

Record-Breaking Rains Show Importance of Having a Post-Accident Plan

Las Vegas is known for being dry because of its location in the middle of Nevada’s desert. When it does rain, however, it pours -- and the effects can be devastating. Not many days ago, the city saw record-setting rains. Here’s a look at what happened.

Record-Breaking Rains in Las Vegas

On April 9th and 10th, Las Vegas saw a rainstorm of rare magnitude. In what’s usually one of the area’s driest months, almost a full inch of rain (0.95 inches) came down in just two days. Most of that, 0.81 inches, poured down on Saturday, April 9th.

The rainfall on both Saturday and Sunday broke a 73-year-old record in Vegas. Previously, the highest rainfall on April 9th was just 0.17 inches in 1943. Saturday’s total more than quadrupled the previous record. Sunday also broke the previous rainfall for April 10th, although not by as much. Sunday’s total of 0.14 inches barely edged out the 0.13 inches that fell on April 10, 1943.

The Rain Caused Over 100 Accidents

The city’s roads aren’t made to handle that much rain, and many of the roads quickly flooded. As a result, there were many auto accidents.

According to the Las Vegas Sun, the Nevada Highway Patrol responded to 127 crashes on Saturday alone. Seven of these were hit-and-runs. From these crashes, 43 people sustained injuries and 77 individuals filed reports of property damage.

Know What to Do If You’re in an Accident

The recent rains and resulting accidents are a reminder, collisions can occur anytime and anywhere on the road. You never know when you might face hazardous road conditions or be struck by an out-of-control vehicle.

In addition to driving safely, it’s important to know what to do if you’re ever in an accident. First, seek medical treatment if necessary and contact the police. If you need to file a claim, a police report may be helpful. Once you’re safe, contact Greenman, Goldberg, Raby and Martinez to see if you have a case.
