My world was turned upside down when my husband, a dedicated Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer, passed away suddenly at just 49 years old from a heart attack. For 22 years, he served our community with dedication, working his way up to detective and becoming well-known in the gang unit. He faced countless dangers, dealt with high-stress situations, and still found time to train recruits and make significant arrests. He was proud of his work, and I was proud of him.
But despite all his years of service, when he was gone, I found myself struggling for support. The workers’ compensation insurance company denied my claims for death benefits, treating me like just another number. While trying to navigate the complicated world of workers’ compensation and heart/lung claims, I was also trying to process my grief. The whole experience felt overwhelming and isolating.
I was introduced to GGRM Law Firm through a close friend when I didn’t know where else to turn. From the first conversation, attorney Lisa Anderson and the GGRM team took up my case and made me feel like I had someone in my corner. They didn’t just hear me—they listened. For the next five years, they stood by me, fighting through every setback and challenging every denial that the insurance company threw our way.
There were many moments when it felt like the system was designed to wear me down. The insurance company denied my claim again and again, questioning whether my husband’s heart condition was connected to his work, even though it was right there on his death certificate. It was like they hoped I would give up. But GGRM didn’t let that happen. The team dug deeper, finding errors in the records and exposing inconsistencies in how my husband’s health assessments had been handled.
Their persistence paid off with a significant ruling that changed everything. The court clarified that the burden of proof in these cases lies with the insurance company. It was their job to show that my husband’s heart condition wasn’t work-related, not my job to prove that it was. This decision wasn’t just a victory for me—it was a step forward for other first responder families who might face similar struggles.
When the case finally closed, it wasn’t about the money for me. I could take care of myself financially. What mattered was honoring my husband’s legacy and ensuring that no other families would have to go through what I did. I finally felt some peace knowing that his years of service hadn’t been overlooked.
Since then, I’ve channeled my energy into helping others. I founded a non-profit to raise awareness about heart health among first responders. Sharing my husband’s story has already made a difference—many officers have gotten checked out and received life-saving treatments because they heard what we went through. It feels good to know that even after he’s gone, my husband is still making an impact.
