Las Vegas Mass Tort Lawyers
Greenman, Goldberg, Raby and Martinez is currently investigating and accepting new claims for injuries related to the drug, Xarelto.
Thanks to modern medicine, many of us are living longer and healthier lives. Yet, some prescription drugs come with risks and complications that far outweigh their benefits. Currently, over 18,000 patients have filed suits against the makers of Xarelto, accusing the blood thinner of causing extensive internal bleeding that exacerbated injuries and caused deaths.
At Greenman, Goldberg, Raby and Martinez, our mass tort lawyers are following these cases very closely and would like to help those in our Las Vegas community who were injured or whose loved ones were injured or died during the use of this drug.
What Xarelto Does and Why It’s Dangerous
Xarelto is a blood thinner, first approved by U.S. regulators in 2011 for use in preventing blood clots in patients undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery. Use of the drug was later extended to patients who suffered from irregular heartbeats and were at high risk of a stroke.
Traditional anticoagulants (blood thinners), most notably warfarin, that do this same job require users to keep a restrictive diet (no excessive drinking and no foods high in vitamin K, the drug's 'antidote' in excessive bleeding situations). In contrast, Xarelto and similar blood-thinning drugs known as novel oral anticoagulants (NOACS) are touted as being easier and more convenient due to their 'elimination' of the need for regular blood check-ups and diet restrictions.
GGRM's mass tort lawyers explain, this "No Blood Test" claim is what exposes patients to unnecessary risks. Our attorneys and others also contend that the drug is being falsely marketed as being 'more effective at preventing strokes' than warfarin.
While all blood thinners have the potential to cause internal bleeding, Xarelto poses added risks as it has no known antidote, reversal agent, or other medication that can be given to stop uncontrollable bleeding. This leaves patients at risk of serious complications should internal or external bleeding occur while they are taking Xarelto or similar NOACS drugs that lack an antidote.
Xarelto risks and claim complications include:
- Bleeding in the brain
- Internal bleeding
- Excessive bleeding resulting in death
- Other serious injuries
According to a MedPge Today/Milwaukee Journal Sentinel investigation, at least 8,000 deaths have been linked to Xarelto and two other NOACS drugs since 2010. In contrast, warfarin, the anticoagulant with a built-in antagonist, and which is dispensed about six times more often than NOACS, was linked to 700 deaths during this period.
